MQ:
Why does a dog bark at his reflection in a mirror?
P:
Because, mostly he sees another dog?
MQ:
Yes, but also because he does not see ‘himself’.
P:
So there is no separate ‘me’ sense in a
dog.
MQ:
Yes. Imagine if you looked in the mirror every morning
and asked, “Who’s that?”
P:
I’d want to know who put that note on the mirror
that says, “I feel good about myself today”.
MQ:
And if two people look in a mirror at the same time?
P:
The physical forms are different.
MQ:
Do you think that the ‘me’ sense appears
the same to each person?
P:
Yes, I think so. The structure of the separate
sense-of-self is the same in both, but the history of
each individual may be very different.
MQ:
The ability to recognize ‘me’ is the fundamental
meaning of self-awareness. Therefore, at the
psychotherapeutic level, the idea of accepting and
loving yourself is considered to be beneficial.
P:
Being wholly obsessed with my own self-image is not
the same thing as having a healthy view of my
independence and autonomy?
