Hurrying to Places We Don't Want to Be

Do you ever stop to question the point of your frenzied pace?
Are you content with your constant
busyness? Did
you ever intend to live at such a tempo?
If not, do you have any idea how can you change
it now?
Part
of the answer is found in understanding the evolution
of ego and the role that it plays in our lives:
While it has taken humanity billions of years
to reach our present point in evolution, the mature ego-mind has been around
for only 4,000
years. Prior
to that, there was no personal sense of “I.”
Since there was no “me,” there was no one
to make choices—nor was there a concept of the
“future” in which to picture that “me.”
And, since there was no concept of an
individual person, there was no concept of ownership
or personal property.
Ultimately, there really was no hurry because
there was no “I” to do the hurrying and no
“future” to rush into.

beneath our hurrying to places we don’t want to be:
Anatomically modern humans first appeared in fossil records about 200,000
years ago. But, for a long, long time when we
met by the entrance
to the cave, for instance, there
was “no-thing” to say. The
fact that we were preverbal also meant that we had
very few thoughts. (Grunting
at each other is not so evolved, is it?).
Even if we saw our reflection in the pond, we
didn’t recognize it because the ego-mind and
separate sense of self had yet to develop.
It was not
until about six thousand years ago,
due mostly to...
